"Itches"

TODOs are one thing but I also have a few things in the back of my mind that I want to do. Here’s a list of those. Get a Masters in computer science or whatever, the field doesn’t matter. Learn Spanish. Travel for 1-6 months in Europe and trek Himalayas for a week one more time. (On a similar note, I’ve thought about becoming a digital nomad but that probably just a fancy idea and won’t happen with a kid anymore.) Build something myself, maybe start a company. Have parents stay with us, wherever that is. Finish learning Deep Learning but that’s going to be the last thing I learn on the technical front (outside work, of course). (The reason I don’t want to drop the ball on this is twofold. One, I want to finish a course that I started, something I haven’t done in a long time. Two, I am fascinated by the subject.) Give back to society on a regular basis. Instead of trying to figure out the best way to do this, I’ll start small, with a recurring monthly donation.

Learning queue

Reminder: Don’t learn in advance. For a new technology, only get an overview. (Clear out basics though.) Don’t do many things at once. Actually, just pick up 1 in addition to work. Why even learn? Build something instead. Learning candidates Check this on why the following list is so lean now. Technical books that will help me learn new skills (something I am not too keen on doing right now): Crafting Interpreters. Rust programming language. Fundamentals of Software Architecture: An Engineering Approach. Might be good if and when I change companies at principal/staff level. MIT 6.824 Distributed Systems (Spring 2020) - hopefully, it makes me implement the core algorithms. Teach Yourself Computer Science. Database Internals. Google SRE. Kafka: The Definitive Guide: Real-Time Data and Stream Processing at Scale. Note that O’Reilly books are available here for free. ...
