Hugo, Ghost and wiki

·2 mins

Just search for something like “Ghost and Hugo” on Google or YouTube and you’ll easily find stories of people moving from one to the other. They’ll even cite the same reason (such as Hugo is just a static site generator) for both directions of the move!

Today, I store both blog posts and notes on this website. And I was thinking of decoupling them into 2 websites instead: Ghost and Wikijs respectively.

  • The biggest problem I have with the current setup is that editing content on my phone or work computer is painful. However, I tried mobile editing on both Ghost and Wikijs and it wasn’t smooth either, so my biggest problem will continue to exist.
  • In Wikijs, I had to think of a URL and possibly title for my note before I could actually start writing. That’s backward. My current setup allows me to quickly capture my thoughts first and think of fluff later - that’s a much better approach.
  • It’s true that setting up an SSG can be a lot of work: for e.g., analytics, comments and layout/theme enhancements. However, I’ve already put in that work and it works well. For e.g., Plausible and Remark42 are both functional now on this website. So, this argument is no longer applicable for me (though, if I were to do this from scratch, I’d probably choose Ghost for my blog).
  • I decided earlier this year that I’ll stay away from new tools.

I already brought up the 2 services on my home server in the last couple of weeks. I’ll leave them there for a few more weeks, lest I change my mind, and get rid of them later.
