Where to spend my time these days?

·1 min

As usual, there are various things where I’d like to devote my time:

  1. Learn stuff by consuming content: this can be either through system design videos or arbitrary content on distributed systems. The idea is that this content consumption will (hopefully) make me smarter and help me get into a good company later on.
  2. Write code to learn things: the top contender for this idea is the labs from the distributed systems course from MIT. It’ll be uncomfortable and I’ll learn fundamentals that few people around me (at work) know about. However, I am slightly skeptical if I’ll ever be able to reuse this knowledge. (This is one of those things where you can only connect the dots looking backwards.)
  3. That Fast AI course on deep learning – but I know that won’t help me in any way in the future.
  4. Other ideas on consuming content: audiobooks, books etc.

I have this fascination of learning new things that I think isn’t right. Is learning is my only goal, then #2 is the right approach. However, if my goal is to move to a better company AT&T some point in the future, #2 won’t be useful.

So, question is what is my goal.
